Getting Connected in Alfriston

2010-06-12-connect---alfriston

Over the weekend a host of young adults from the Connect Zone went to Alfriston in Sussex...

...to spend some time together and with God.

Setting out at 6.30pm on Friday night with a minibus full of singing, cheering and vuvuzela-blowing guys, a van full of food and a car full of baby stuff for Asher, we arrived at the Youth Hostel we were staying at in style – we’re just not sure it’s one they’ve ever seen before!

Saturday was packed with activity – sharing testimonies and our favourite verses in small groups in the morning, taking a walk round a reservoir which involved making friends with horses, grabbing ice creams and a lot of chatting, playing football in the garden at the hostel (Elfa Mundell is a firecracker and we dare any man to play against her!!) and taking a trip into the local village and enjoying the quintessentially English shops in a quaint setting which could, of course, only be appreciated to its full glory with a traditional cream tea.

Then it was the football. I think I'll just say that face paints, flags, bunting, tambourines and vuvuzelas filled the hostel with an air it didnt' have before and our little set-up attracted a few other people to the mix which gave me more faith in the boldness of the human race; I mean I thought I’d seen it all before watching Imogen carefully construct a French plait in Jon Liversedge’s hair, Faith getting so excited the TV nearly toppled on multiple occasions and Steve George jumping for joy any time an English player kicked the ball anywhere near the goal!

The weekend finished with time to press into God on the Sunday morning and bring it back to the purpose of why we were away together – to get to know Him and one another more deeply. Unity was something Jesus prayed for in the Garden of Gethsemane and something which is only built through maturity and relationships and it was a great reminder that while competition and fun is all part of living life to the full, it serves a much larger foundation and purpose when we as a family need to move into being the army of God.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend full of memories I will never forget and I thank God for the people He has blessed us with in our zone.
